What is home tuition?
Home tuition combines one-to-one English lessons with homestay accommodation in your home. You host the student as a guest and provide a set number of private lessons per week, usually in your living room, dining room or a quiet study.
We handle enquiries, matching, written confirmations, payments and support. You focus on teaching and hosting.

The details
How the programme works
Who are the students?
Most home tuition students are adults (18+) who want focused, individual support: for example improving general English, preparing for an exam, or working on professional communication. We also occasionally receive requests for 16–17 year olds; in those cases, additional safeguarding checks apply.
- Minimum age is usually 16 for students placed on home tuition.
- For under-18s we require enhanced safeguarding measures and DBS checks.
- Students may travel alone or with a family member; we will clarify arrangements in writing.
How pricing works
We work with clear rate bands so that you know exactly how your earnings are calculated and students receive transparent quotes.
- You receive a teaching rate per hour and a separate homestay/board rate per week. We agree these with you in advance within our framework.
- We issue written quotes to students which include all fees. You do not discuss prices or separate “extras” directly with the student.
- We pay you by bank transfer (usually after the student’s arrival, subject to our terms). We will explain timing and amounts clearly before you accept any booking.
- You remain responsible for declaring your income for tax purposes and for holding appropriate insurance for your home.
Availability, matching & expectations
Home tuition placements depend on the mix of requests we receive and your availability profile. Some tutors receive several bookings per year; others prefer only occasional placements.
- We match students based on level, goals, dates, board option, location and any specific requests.
- You can decline any placement that does not feel right for you or your household.
- Most demand is for London and the South East, but we also receive requests for other areas of the UK.
Standards & safeguarding
We take safeguarding and quality seriously. We will always be honest with you about what we can and cannot offer and will only place students where we are confident that expectations can be met.
- We expect a clean, comfortable home with a private bedroom for the student and sufficient study space.
- House rules (for example about smoking, visitors and use of the kitchen) should be reasonable, clear and shared in advance.
- For under-18s, appropriate checks (including DBS where required) must be completed before any placement begins.
- You must ensure you hold suitable home and contents insurance and that your use of the property is compatible with your mortgage or tenancy agreement.
Example week for a host tutor
Example: 20 hours of lessons with half-board accommodation
- Mon–Fri, 09:30–12:00
One-to-one lessons (2.5 hours each morning).
- Afternoons
Student studies independently or explores the local area, depending on their interests and confidence.
- Evenings
Dinner together plus informal conversation practice (no formal teaching required unless agreed).
This is just one example. We will only offer you placements that fit realistically with your work pattern and family life.

Board options (meals)
We offer different board options to students. We will only propose arrangements that you are happy to provide.
Self-catering
The student buys and prepares their own food. You agree reasonable kitchen access and storage. This can work well if your schedule varies or you prefer to keep cooking separate.
Bed & Breakfast
You provide breakfast every day at agreed times. The student arranges their own lunch and dinner, with reasonable kitchen access if appropriate.
Half Board
You provide breakfast and an evening meal every day. This is a popular option as it gives regular shared time together while leaving afternoons free.
Full Board
You provide breakfast, lunch and dinner. This may suit younger students or those who prefer everything included. We will only propose full board if it fits comfortably with your routine.
What we look for in a host tutor
We welcome applications from experienced English teachers and professionals with strong English and relevant tutoring experience. We look at your teaching background, home environment and household fit.
- Relevant teaching qualification or substantial experience in teaching/tutoring English or related subjects.
- Clear spoken English and the ability to explain language points at a level appropriate to the student.
- A comfortable, welcoming home, with a private bedroom for the student and a quiet space for lessons.
- Reasonable availability and openness to occasional evening or weekend arrivals.
- Reliability, good communication and willingness to follow our safeguarding and reporting procedures.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a TEFL or CELTA qualification?
A recognised teaching qualification is helpful, especially for exam preparation, but we also consider experienced tutors, retired teachers and professionals with strong English and mentoring experience. We will be honest about the type of students we can match you with.
Do I need a DBS check?
For adult-only placements, we will look at your overall profile and references. For under-18s, an appropriate DBS check and safeguarding awareness are mandatory. We can discuss the best way to arrange this if you are not currently working in a setting that requires one.
How quickly will I get a placement?
This depends on your availability, location, rates and profile. Some hosts in high-demand areas may receive several enquiries per year; others may only be matched occasionally. We never guarantee a minimum number of placements.
Am I employed by you?
No. You are an independent host and tutor. We arrange placements and pay you for the agreed lessons and board, but you are responsible for your own tax, insurance and compliance with any conditions on your mortgage, tenancy or visa.
