What is Online One-to-One English Tuition?

Online one-to-one English tuition gives you a UK teacher to yourself, on a schedule that suits you, focused on exactly what you need. Lessons are live by video — usually Zoom or Microsoft Teams — and the syllabus is built around your level, your job, your goals (exam, fluency, business, accent, writing) and your weak areas.

About Online One-to-One English Tuition

Every school is accredited (British Council, English UK or EAQUALS) and teachers are qualified with CELTA, DELTA, or equivalent. Most schools offer a free trial lesson so you can pick a teacher you click with. Lessons typically run 45–60 minutes; you can buy single lessons, weekly packages, or block discounts. Materials, homework and feedback are sent by email or shared online drive between sessions.

Questions students ask

How is one-to-one different from a group online course?

Pace and personalisation. In a group of 6–12 students, lessons follow a syllabus and the teacher splits attention. One-to-one moves at your pace, focuses on your weak areas, and lets you bring real work documents, exam papers, or speaking topics you care about. You progress 2–3× faster per hour, but it costs 2–3× more per hour.

Can I choose my teacher?

At most schools, yes. Schools usually offer a free trial lesson (15–30 minutes) so you can meet a teacher, check the connection, and see if the teaching style fits. If it doesn’t click, request a different teacher — schools are used to it. Some schools assign a default teacher first; others let you browse profiles.

How flexible is the schedule?

Very. Most one-to-one online tuition is booked lesson-by-lesson or in weekly blocks, with rescheduling allowed up to 24 hours in advance at most schools. Time zones are negotiated — UK teachers often offer evening UK time (which is daytime in Asia) or early morning UK time (which is afternoon in the Americas).

What if I want to focus on something specific — pronunciation, writing, business?

That’s the main use case. Tell the school what you want — for example, “improve my email writing”, “reduce my Italian accent”, “prepare for IELTS speaking”, “practice for a UK university interview” — and they’ll match you with a teacher who specialises. Some schools have specialist coaches (accent reduction, exam prep, business sector knowledge).

How much does online one-to-one cost?

Roughly £30–£70 per hour depending on the school, teacher seniority, and whether you buy single lessons or block packages (10+ lessons usually drops the per-hour rate by 10–20%). It’s more expensive than group online English, but you progress faster, the schedule is yours, and it’s still cheaper than in-person one-to-one in the UK (£60–£120/hour).
